Welcome to Alverno College

Alverno College is a four-year, liberal arts, independent, Catholic college for women, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Chartered in 1887 by the School Sisters of St. Francis, the college offers weekday undergraduate programs and Alverno on the Weekend undergraduate programs for women, as well as graduate programs for women and men.  This nationally renowned institution is heralded as an innovative leader in pedagogy, and has received international acclaim as a pioneer in developing a measurable, outcome-focused curriculum in which the individual student can grow as a learner.

The School Sisters of St. Francis are the founders and sponsors of the college.  Inspired by the Franciscan tradition, Alverno College embodies many of the tenets of the School Sisters in its mission to educate and serve a variety of communities.  Service to the community, improving society by addressing educational needs, and working for social justice, especially for women, are core components of both the founding order and the college.  Alverno College and the School Sisters of St. Francis continue to work together to ensure opportunities for growth, learning and a better quality of life in our community.
