More than one hundred Alverno students packed the formal lounge at Austin Hall for the official American Idol Milwaukee episode viewing party Wednesday night. Between live appearances on FOX 6 News, students shared stories about their favorite contestants, how long they’d been American Idol fans and who was the best judge (most people missed Simon).

One student, Carly Schneider, had a more personal Idol experience – she was one of the thousands who tried out at the Milwaukee auditions held last summer.

"I won a contest through my local FOX News station in West DePere, and it got me a ticket to try out in Milwaukee," said Schneider.

While her rendition of Summertime from the musical Porgy and Bess didn’t get her in front of the celebrity judges, Schneider had no regrets.

"It was a whirlwind experience, and I’m glad I tried out. You have to grab those chances when they happen."

Alverno grabbed its chance to host the official viewing party when the national FOX promotions office reached out to find a community of vibrant, excited young fans. Staff from throughout the College quickly assembled the event and got the word out, welcoming students with popcorn, pizza and prizes.

"Hopefully we’ll see someone we know," said Jordan Nickelatti, a second-year nursing student. She and her friends, including fellow resident Kaitlin Baxter, a second-year education student, have gained a renewed interest in American Idol this year.

"I got back into Idol when I heard it was coming to Milwaukee," said Baxter. "Plus, I really like Jennifer Lopez – she’s the ultimate woman."

No matter who their favorites were, the students all agreed on one thing: the party was a great way to kick off the spring semester.
