U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan praises Alverno's teacher preparation
In a speech to Columbia University students and faculty on October 22, 2009, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan blasted many graduate school of education programs for doing a poor job of preparing teachers for the classroom.
Duncan then went on to praise a few schools for their teacher prep programs, including Alverno. Duncan said, "Alverno College, a Catholic women's college in Milwaukee, also requires a rigorous field experience in the public schools and has faculty and local principals assess videotapes of student teachers. Eighty-five percent of Alverno graduates are still in the classroom five years after graduation, an extremely high retention rate."

Alverno College recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 America's Best Colleges guide
For the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Alverno College in its annual "America's Best Colleges" guide. Alverno was cited in several categories and was Wisconsin's only educational institution listed in the "A Strong Commitment to Teaching" and "Top Up-and-Coming Schools" categories.
The "A Strong Commitment to Teaching" category recognized those institutions with faculty who have an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. In the "Top Up-and-Coming" category, Alverno was recognized for the second consecutive year as a school to watch and was ranked among the best in the Midwest. This category recognizes colleges and universities "that have recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities."
In the "Programs to Look For" category, Alverno was cited in five of eight programs commonly linked to student success: Internships, Senior Capstone, First-Year Experience, Learning Communities and Service Learning. Alverno was in the company of such distinguished universities as Brown, Duke, Princeton and Yale, yet was ranked in more programs than any other Ivy League school. Alverno was the only private college or university in Wisconsin recognized in this category.
Alverno remained in the tier one category of Master’s granting colleges and universities and ranked higher than any other Wisconsin private college.
